The publication analyzes trends internationally for developing innovative projects that have a social mission in Latin America and maps the main actors of the ecosystem. Two cases of social innovation in the region are highlighted, which have been supported by MIF: Socialab (Chile) and Compartamos with Colombia (Colombia). The document provides a guide to academic debate on the meaning, scope and ways of measuring social innovation within Latin America. It also provides a map of the ecosystem of social innovation (promotion, financing, incubation and development of the sector) to visualize the main stakeholders in the region. The study aims to define and analyze social innovation projects based on five variables: (1) the social impact, (2) economic sustainability, (3) the type of innovation, (4) intersectoral collaboration and (5) the ability of the innovation to scale up and/or be replicated. The five variables are illustrated in the report with a number of examples of social innovation in Latin America, which subsequently serve as a model for the analysis of the Socialab and Compartamos cases, proposing an evaluation methodology for social innovation projects in Latin America.
