The intention of this paper is not to close discussions but rather to put a stake in the ground, setting out an understanding of social innovation that will provide parameters for the TEPSIE research project. This paper begins with a literature review of the term social innovation and its use. Drawing on extensive research, the author’s then provide a working definition of social innovation, including core elements, common features, a typology, a description of the process, and an account of how social innovation occurs in the four sectors (non-profit; public; private sector and informal sectors).
