The National Indigenous Peasant Movement (MNCI, in its spanish initials) is an organization integrated by movements from different localities of the country to promote the improvement of the peasant living conditions. The MNCI Integrates the Latin American Coordinator of Rural Organizations (CLOC, in its spanish initials) and the international network La Vía Campesina.

The MNCI was created in 2003 as the culmination of almost 20 years of work in which the space was consolidated through local organizations. From that moment, the movement established as central axes of its work to advance in an Integral Agrarian Reform and the Food Sovereignty through Popular Organization.

    Creation of the MNCI

    The MNCI emerged in 2003 with the aim of giving a national framework to different struggles that had hitherto provincial expressions, such as the emblematic case of MOCASE (Peasant Movement of Santiago del Estero) started in 1990.

    In March 2008, argentinian federal government introduced a new sliding-scale taxation system for agricultural exports. The move led to a nationwide lockout by farming associations making visible the dispute of two models: agribusiness vs. family farming.

    Law proposal to stop evictions

    In 2011 the MNCI presented a bill project proposing to stop land evictions. The initiative was signed by the deputy Edgardo Depetri and accompanied by other legislators from the center-left parties. However, he would not find majority support.

    National Roundtable for Sustainable Agriculture

    In February of 2014, was performed the National Roundtable for Sustainable Agriculture convened by the Sub-Secretariat for Family Agriculture in Santiago del Estero. The MNCI promoted the coexistence of both agriculture systems (agribusiness and family farming).

    In 2014, the argentinian national congress enacted the Family Farming law. The MNCI participated actively with other peasant organizations in the elaboration of the law. that represented a big step to generate significant changes in the argentinian rural structure.
