FL1 was founded by a global software company to act as a public-facing showcase on the future of design, in 2013. Its extensive workshop facilities are primarily available to employees, and to members of the organisation’s bi-annual cohort of Artists-in-Residence. It also hosts ‘make nights’ and frequent public workshops; and strategically sites itself within the wider local hardware and hacker communities. The workshop space has been designed to accommodate both work practices and large tour parties, encompassing architectural elements intended for spectacle and large spaces between machines.
