TRANSIT Newsletter

August 19 2015

Back in 2009, former European Commission President Barroso announced social innovation as a way to “bring immediate solutions to the pressing social issues citizens are confronted with”. Since then, the concept’s popularity has literally exploded. Yet the challenges we face have deep roots, requiring transformative change to bring about lasting solutions.

How social innovation can be a part of this is the very question that we seek to answer in TRANSIT. Over the past year-and-a-half, our partners from twelve universities across Europe and Latin America have studied socially innovative networks, from Impact Hubs to Ecovillages, developed a framework for understanding transformative social innovation, and are now starting on a second round of empirical work, in which they’ll explore such exciting networks as those working on Co-housing, Participatory Budgeting or Basic Income.

It is in this context that we welcome you to the first edition of our newsletter. In it, we share with you stories of social innovation and introduce you to some of the people behind the project. This edition will also bring you up to speed on our upcoming events and work, as well as ways to get involved.
